Introduction
Turpan was called Gushi in the ancient times. Between six and seven thousand years ago, there were people living in this area. High temperature and rich ground water resources make Turpan abundant in fruit, especially grapes and melons. The local government had built a grape street for tourists to see and pick grapes. It is the only place to see the Karez Wells. The underground irrigation system in Turpan is one of China's three greatest feats of ancient engineering. Construction began on this ancient irrigation system during the Han Dynasty and as the Silk Road developed, methods of construction found their way to Central Asia and Persia.
Location: lies in the Turpan Basin in the eastern corner of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region at the southern foot of Tianshan Range. It’s a key part of Silk Road.
